Sometimes big summer and winter storms make the electricity
go out. Here are some good rules for keeping you and your family
safe during black-outs.
Rule #1 – Keep a storm safety kit handy.
You
will need:
- Flashlights
- Battery-operated
radio
- Extra batteries
- Small fire
extinguisher
- Blankets
- Bottled
water
- First aid
supplies like bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment
- Snacks like
granola bars, fruit cups, canned food that can be eaten cold
Rule
#2 – Stay inside. Lightning, wind and ice damage can damage
power lines, making them dangerous.
Rule #3 – Use flashlights whenever you
can. Candles can be a fire hazard.
Rule #4 – Don’t open the refrigerator
or freezer unless absolutely necessary. Food will last up to a day
in the refrigerator if the door is left closed and up to four days
in a freezer, if left alone.
Don't forget to ask
a grown-up to call Chatham-Kent Hydro so the utility can repair
the lines as soon as possible.
