Info Zapper Power Team Brain Teaser Story Contest Home

Sometimes big summer and winter storms make the electricity go out. Here are some good rules for keeping you and your family safe during black-outs.

Rule #1 – Keep a storm safety kit handy.

    You will need:
  • Flashlights
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Extra batteries
  • Small fire extinguisher
  • Blankets
  • Bottled water
  • First aid supplies like bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment
  • Snacks like granola bars, fruit cups, canned food that can be eaten cold

Rule #2 – Stay inside. Lightning, wind and ice damage can damage power lines, making them dangerous.
Rule #3 – Use flashlights whenever you can. Candles can be a fire hazard.
Rule #4 – Don’t open the refrigerator or freezer unless absolutely necessary. Food will last up to a day in the refrigerator if the door is left closed and up to four days in a freezer, if left alone.

Don't forget to ask a grown-up to call Chatham-Kent Hydro so the utility can repair the lines as soon as possible.
